Valamo Monastery

Active centre of the Orthodox religious life and culture in Finland. Located in the beautiful surroundings of Heinävesi, North Karelia region. The monastery welcomes visitors throughout the year. The peaceful atmosphere of the monastery and close proximity to nature offer the hurried people in the busy world of today a rare opportunity to relax − far from the bustle and noise of everyday life.

The cultural center has exhibition halls for the permanent exhibition of the historical church items of the monastery as well as for the temporary exhibitions. The monastery library has specialized in Orthodox culture and theology and serves in addition to the brotherhood, scholars and students also the visitors of the monastery. All the visitors are heartily welcome!

Q Accommodation

Valamo Monastery provides simple and peaceful accommodation for all who wish to spend a night or longer in a unique environment. By staying in our monastery, you can get acquainted with the Orthodox Church and traditions - and unwind in peace and quiet. The tranquillity and stress-free atmosphere of the monastery supplies a much needed contrast to hectic everyday life.

All rooms are non-smoking and have either shared or private bathroom facilities. Some rooms have access to Wi-Fi, which is free of charge. None of the rooms have television or radio. Room rates include a generous buffet breakfast. During Christmas and Easter only all-inclusive packages are on offer, which include meals and programme.

Silence in the monastery begins at 10 pm. The residents can then prepare for a good night’s sleep. Please note also the dress code for men and women visiting the monastery: knees and shoulders must be covered at all times.

Q Churches

The monastery has nowadays three churches and three chapels. The guests are welcome to visit all of them. The church buildings and their interior complement the teaching of the church in many ways: in fact, all the details you see inside a church building are meant to support the recited and sung prayer.

Most of the icons and church items in the churches of the monastery come from the original location of the monastery on the Valamo (Valaam) island in Lake Ladoga. In addition to the churches, it is also possible to see church items - for example church textiles, like vestments - in the exhibitions of the monastery.

Q The Cafe - Restaurant Trapesa

The main meals of the day – breakfast, lunch and dinner – are available from the buffet table with a separate salad bar, which always includes the monastery's own sauerkraut! Most of the rolls and pastries are the produce of the monastery's own baker. The restaurant serves the monestary's own wine, beer and spirits.

Lunch and dinner are served continually from 11 am to 5 pm (up to 7 pm in the summer) and coffee, tea and snacks are available all day. In July the Restaurant Trapesa takes on a more Slavic atmosphere when the Valamo Tea Table is laid out every evening from 6 to 9 pm. Private rooms can be hired for family occasions, for example. The picturesque Tsars' Room seats 20 guests, the spacious Red Room 50 guests and the Yellow Room 40 guests.

Q Groups and meetings

Valamo Monastery offers a peaceful and distraction-free environment for meetings, training sessions and corporate and private functions for groups of up to 300 people. Restaurant Trapesa provides a unique venue for special occasion family gatherings.

The Valamo Monastery area has various conference rooms ranging in capacity, from the Cultural Centre’s large conference room (seating 300) to compact suites seating 5 – 15 people. All rooms - apart from Red Guest Cabin’s meeting room - are equipped with Wi-Fi access.

Q Souvenir shop Tuohus

The souvenir shop of Valamo Monastery is known by the name Tuohus and serves visitors daily from morning until night. The shelves of the little shop contain an extensive selection of products associated with Orthodox traditions: including hand painted icons, icon prints, oil lamps, prayer ribbons, postcards, cross and icon jewellery, beeswax church candles made at the monestary, monastery tea and many other treasures – like charming gifts and decorations.

Q Wine shop Herman

The Valamo Monastery Winery offers tourists the best local wines. Wine from Valamo Monastery is a welcome memento for loved ones, an appreciated gift, and a popular way to celebrate a return home after a rewarding monastery visit. Welcome to visit Valamo Monastery Winery!

Q Cultural center

The cultural center has exhibition halls for the permanent exhibition of the historical church items of the monastery as well as for the temporary exhibitions. The monastery library has specialized in Orthodox culture and theology and serves in addition to the brotherhood, scholars and students also the visitors of the monastery. The conference rooms of the Cultural center bring together both Orthodox and other organizations that arrange their events in the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery. In 2006, the Cultural center was expanded with exhibition halls for the historical church items as well as for temporary exhibitions.
