Isojärvi National Park

Located on the border of Kuhmoinen and Jämsä, in Pirkanmaa region.

  • The park opened in 1982 and covers 22 square kilometers
  • The Park is an old logging site with a range of activities on offer from hiking and canoeing to just admiring breathtaking views.
  • The park is a popular hiking destination: There are around 30 kilometres of marked trails that form circular routes of varying lengths (3.8–11 km).
  • 20 kilometers long Lake Isojärvi is ideal for canoeing, rowing and fishing.
  • The wooded hills and valleys around Lake Isojärvi bear traces left by both two-legged and four-legged loggers. Old cycle paths lead to former lumberjacks’ cabins and croft houses. The only loggers working in the park today are beavers. It’s hard to spot these shy animals, but you can’t miss the impressive results of their labours.
  • In the area, the hilly forests and deep ravines alternate in the landscape that has been moulded since the ice-age.
  • For cyclists, there is a route that leads from Heret to Lortikka and returns along a small dirt road, a total of 16 kilometers. There is also a bike path between the National Park and Kuhmoinen, where you can enjoy Kuhmoinen’s rugged scenery and beautiful nature.
  • Visitors to Isojärvi National Park can also enter the park without their own equipment, as Herety’s cabin has great equipment rental opportunities. You can rent a canoe, rowing boat, packraft, tent, sleeping bag, camping stove or even a backpack from Herety’s cabin.
  • Suitable for visitors of all ages all year. The terrain is difficult at places. No accessible services.
