Petkeljärvi National Park

Located in Ilomantsi, in the North Karelia region of Finland.

• The Park was established in 1956 and covers 7 square kilometres.
• Its specialities are e.g. fortification from the Continuation War, some of which have been renovated, and valuable eskers.
• The ridges surrounding the waters of Lake Petkeljärvi are part of a geological formation dozens of kilometres in length. It extends from far-away Tolvajärvi in Russian Karelia via Petkeljärvi and Putkela to Ilomantsi, south of Lake Koitere.
• The Petkeljärvi National Park, along with Patvinsuo National Park, belongs to the North-Karelian biosphere reserves of UNESCO.
• The area’s vegetation mostly consists of light Scots pine forests.
• North American beavers are residents of the national park. The fruits of their labours are numerous; trees falling on routes, den and dam structures, and blocks of aspen floating in the water, with the bark removed.
• A feeling of wilderness in the summer of area is brought by the black-throated diver – the official animal of the park.
• Walking in Petkeljärvi is like walking in a picture postcard. There are a total of around 10 kilometres of marked trails, and it is a popular destination for day trips.
• The area is also brilliant for canoeing. The River Koitajoki, which is over 200 km long, is known as a good canoeing destination.
• Skiing is one of the best way to explore the area in the winter and the park’s waters are ideal for fishing.
• Petkeljärvi National Park is suitable for visitors of all ages all year. The Petkeljärvi Outdoor Centre and its immediate surroundings are suitable for visitors with mobility difficulties.
