Hossa National Park

Wilderness area and national park located in the Kainuu and North Ostrobothnia regions, in Kuusamo, Suomussalmi and Taivalkoski municipalities.

• The Park opened on June 17, 2017. Hossa has the best water tour areas in Finland. The lakes in the area are great for kayaking and rowing, and the rapids are relatively easy.
• The nature of area is diverse and varied. There are many small lakes, swamps, short rivers and streams in the area. There are about 130 lakes and ponds in the area. They are separated by several ridges.
• The forests are mainly pine forests. Spruce grows mainly on the upper slopes. In the forests grows cowberrys and blueberries, in the swamps grows hilla. Delicious forest mushrooms can also be found in Hossa National Park.
• Lots of reindeers and deers lives in the area. All of Finland’s large carnivores have also been found in Hossa, of which bears are most common. The bird species is wilderness. Movers in the area often encounter woodpeckers, capercaillies and swans.
• Hossa`s the most well-known sights are the 4000 year old rock paintings of Värikallio on the shore cliff of Lake Somerjärvi in ​​the northern part of the area. 
• In January 2016, Suomussalmi Hossa, Moilasenvaara and the Kuusamo Julma-Ölky area were proposed for designation as Finland’s 100th anniversary national park.
