Olavinlinna Castle

15th-century three-tower castle located in Savonlinna, Finland.

  • Olavinlinna is built on an island in the Kyrönsalmi strait that connects the lakes Haukivesi and Pihlajavesi. It is the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing.
  • The castle forms a spectacular stage for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, held annually in the summer since 1912. Olavinlinna Castle is one of the best-known sights in Finland.

How to get there?

  • If one is coming to the castle from the west it is best to drive past the Savonlinna Market square and Passenger harbor. From there on signs lead to Linnankatu street and to Olavinlinna. If one is coming from the east one can drive straight from highway 14 to Tottinkatu street, which has signs leading to Linnankatu street and to Olavinlinna.
  • In the winter parking spots can be found nearby the castle along Linnankatu street. Cars can also be left in a car park located on Tottinkatu street.
  • During summer (June-August) travelers should take into account special traffic arrangements and traffic signs.
  • Linnankatu street leads to Olavinlinna. Many other tourist attractions can be found along the street, for example Nestori – Saimaa Nature Centre, Riihisaari – Savonlinna Provincial Museum and some shops and cafes.
  • It is even possible to come to Olavinlinna by boat, on a charter cruise (depends on the water level).
