Pyhä-Häkki National Park

Located in the area of Saarijärvi, in Central Finland region.

• The Park was established in 1956 and covers 13 square kilometres.
• The area is the home of the most beautiful ancient forest in southern Finland. Its old pines and other ancient trees that have been decomposed by bracket fungi have been given protected status.
• Half of the area is forests and the other half is mires. Kotaneva and Riihineva are among the most impressive mires, and they are also accessible via duckboards.
• Forest fires and storms of past times have moulded the structure of forests in Pyhä-Häkki, but there have been no large natural upheavals since the National Park was established.
• Dead standing trees offer fantastic nesting and feeding place for many bird species.
• The Emblem of Pyhä-Häkki National Park is Black Woodpecker.
• In the magnificent pine forests of Mastomäki, the trees are 250 years old on average. The park’s most famous ancient pine tree, the Big Old Tree, which is now a snag, began growing in 1518. The giant’s diameter is 288 cm.
• Hiking is the best way to reach the sights in the park and enjoy the wild. There are approximately 30 km of marked trails in the park.
• In winter, there is a 1.5 km ski trail suitable for classic cross-country skiing, maintained by the local authorities of Saarijärvi and Kannonkoski. The trail continues beyond the park’s borders. Snowshoeing is also an excellent way to enjoy the pristine snow.
• Mountain biking is allowed according to everyman’s rights. Always stay on clearly visible tracks and pay attention to other hikers.
• Pyhä-Häkki National Park is suitable for visitors of all ages. Easy access. No accessible services.
