Kurjenrahka National Park

Located in Southwest Finland, areas of Aura, Turku, Masku, Mynämäki, Nousiainen, Pöytyä and Rusko.

  • The Park was established in 1998 and covers 29 square kilometres. The area consists mainly of bog but also includes primeval forests, some of which have been unmanaged for over 150 years.
  • The Eurasian lynx is a permanent resident of area, but brown bears and gray wolves have also been observed and are known to reside in areas within or close to the park.
  • The Park is located in the area of ​​several municipalities. It is the largest protected, natural bog area in Southwest Finland. It is about 35 kilometers from the center of Turku. In the vicinity of the park there is also the Vaskijärvi Nature Park.
  • Kurjenrahka National Park has mostly rugged oases, but there are also forests and straight lakes. Some of the forests, such as the Pukkipalo treasure area, are remarkably old. The fauna and flora are mainly typical salt flora.
  • However, the area is also home to wilderness, rare and endangered animal species in Southwest Finland, such as the flying squirrel, the woodpecker and the bone gauge. The area is also the southernmost occurrence of many northern bird species.
  • The biggest attraction is the border stone of Kuhankuono, and other popular places to visit are the Kurjenpesä Nature House on the shores of Lake Savojärvi and the Rousapiha recreation area in the municipality of Nousiainen.
  • There are several marked trails in the area. The marked trails are well connected to the Kuhankuono Hiking Trail Network outside the park area. Together, they form a trail system of more than 150 kilometres.
  • Kurjenrahka National Park is suitable for visitors of all ages all year. The yard of the Kurjenpesä Nature Information Hut is suitable for visitors with mobility difficulties.
